How to split a PDF in 3 steps

Three split modes — pick what fits your workflow.

1

Upload your PDF

Drop a PDF file or click the dropzone. All pages render as thumbnails in a grid — usually within a second for short documents, a few seconds for 100+ page files.

2

Choose a split mode

Extract Custom Range: type ranges like 1-3, 5, 7 to produce one trimmed PDF. Split Every Page: generate one 1-page PDF per page, packed into a ZIP. Visual Selector: click the thumbnails you want to keep.

3

Download the result

Click Extract or Split. The tool rebuilds the PDF(s) instantly and produces a direct download — a single PDF or a ZIP archive of every page.

About the PDF Splitter

Everything you need to know

Why split PDFs?

Traditional PDF splitters upload your documents to a remote server, process them, and stream the results back. That exposes sensitive files — contracts, invoices, medical records, IDs — to third-party infrastructure, uses bandwidth, and often has file-size limits. This tool reads, selects, and rebuilds PDFs instantly on your device. Zero upload, zero server, zero privacy risk.

When to use each mode

Extract Custom Range is best for pulling a handful of specific pages — a signed signature page, a particular chapter, or an appendix. Split Every Page is best for turning a scanned bundle into individual files or separating a multi-receipt scan into single receipts. Visual Selector is best when you don't know the page numbers offhand and want to eyeball which pages to keep.

Understanding the range syntax

The custom range parser accepts a comma-separated list of single pages and inclusive ranges: 1-3 means pages 1, 2, 3; 5 means just page 5. You can combine them freely: 1-3, 5, 7-9, 12 produces a 7-page document. Reversed ranges like 5-3 are normalized to 3-5. Duplicates are silently removed. Out-of-bounds pages raise a clear error before any work is done.

Performance and quality

Page extraction is a data-structure operation, not an image operation. Pages are copied with their original content streams intact — text stays text, vectors stay vectors, embedded fonts stay embedded. The only cost is memory: loading a PDF roughly doubles its size in RAM during extraction. After download, memory is released. A modern laptop splits a 200-page 50MB PDF in under 10 seconds.
